Oncology is a key therapeutic area for AbbVie, with a portfolio consisting of three marketed products — Imbruvica, Venclexta, and Empliciti — and a pipeline containing multiple promising new molecules that are being studied in nearly 200 clinical trials in 19 different types of cancer. AbbVie is expanding its oncology hub on the West Coast, with three sites in the San Francisco Bay Area (Redwood City, South San Francisco, and Sunnyvale) focused on the discovery and development of novel oncology therapies. More than 1,000 AbbVie scientists, clinicians, and product developers with strong entrepreneurial roots work across these three sites. They combine their expertise in immuno-oncology, stem cells, and cell-signaling with their knowledge of bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and covalent-inhibitor technologies to discover and develop novel cancer treatments. This position is based at Stemcentrx, AbbVie’s South San Francisco, CA location. This position is responsible for facilitating strategic planning and execution across the Stemcentrx site. The successful candidate will provide individual leadership and consultation for complex transformational business programs in close collaboration with functional area heads and the respective leadership team. This person will support functional area heads with development, communication and execution of strategic programs and executive projects to advance the business. The role entails communicating and presenting key information to leadership within areas of responsibility, as well as responsibility for the identification, planning and implementation of activities and projects aligned with and enable the achievement of departmental strategies, goals, and objectives. The Business Operations Manager is primarily accountable to ensure functional areas operate within the current financial plan/budget, including headcount, as well as supporting all operations and OEC related compliance needs – creating alignment and synergy across with other West Coast operations and internal Stemcentrx business units. Major Responsibilities:
Act as the single point of contact for the Discovery and Development community on all scientific operations and planning initiatives, supporting leadership to keep scientist in the science and foster the culture of Alpine style across the site (Alpine Style – Cultural mantra of legacy Stemcentrx where by any individual will take on any task or responsibility regardless of their job function to support the overall site mission of helping the patient and curing cancer)
Provide forward looking portfolio and resource analyses. Accountable for short- and long-term forecasting of financial and headcount resource needs in various scenarios. Partner with functional area head in the financial planning process for future initiatives and projects, forecasting and roll-up. Facilitate discussions with functional area head for Long Range Plan, yearly budget cycles and monthly forecasting updates based on latest best estimate.
Acts with demonstrated ability to analyze change management issues and opportunities, foster innovation and the development of creative mechanisms for solving business issues, and plan/oversee effective implementation of projects and/or initiatives.
Support all compliance related requirements for Stemcentrx including HCP reporting, interactions with competitors, and annual plan creation / maintenance with CCG (Central Consultancy Group)
Act as primary liaison to AbbVie’s OEC (Office of Ethics and Compliance), ensuring compliance on all existing programs and planned future initiatives for the Discovery and Development business units
Provide leadership and develop strategic recommendations to departments to ensure area operates within the current financial plan/update budget.
Support the patents and publications process for all Discovery and Development scientists including the coordination of annual planning activities and administration of awards and payment
The primary point of contact for all lab services and collaboration budget tracking, including managing actuals versus plan variance, monthly LBE submissions, and the utilization of Apttus milestone tracking and management
PhD or equivalent & 4+ years, MS or equivalent & 6+ years, or BS & 8+ years postdoc/industry experience, including 7+ years of leadership responsibility, is required. Advanced degree in related scientific field preferred (e.g., MS or Ph.D. in Oncology, Chemistry, etc.). MBA or Project Management Institute (PMI) Project Management Professional (PMP) certification preferred.
Strong cross-functional management skills with proven effective influencing abilities. Previous experience leading multi-divisional and multi-functional teams, globally preferred.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written; strong business acumen and effective negotiation skills.
Experience overseeing or monitoring functional budgets and developing budget forecasts.
Experience working in a complex and matrix environment.
Demonstrated ability to craft compelling business cases that prompt appropriate action.
3+ years of work experience in the area supported (e.g. Discovery, Development) and 6+ years in pharmaceutical, healthcare or regulated industry preferred.
Proven track record of implementing change management strategy; successful project planning; management of highly complex business and technology initiatives is preferred.
