Nursing Service has a position available in Surgical Services for a full time Nurse Practitioner (NP). The Nurse Practitioner will execute position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care for Veterans receiving care through Surgical Services as an ICU NP and General Surgery Clinic NP. The NP meets the needs of customers while supporting VA missions and consistently communicates and treats customers (Veterans, their representatives, visitors, and all VA staff) in a courteous, tactful, and respectful manner. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with customers constructively and appropriately. The NP will work collaboratively with residents/fellows /physician staff. All medical documentation will be done in the Computer Patient Record System (CPRS). The NP plays a key role in management of patients seen in the SICU, surgical wards, surgical clinics, operating room and other interventional areas. The NP uses sound judgment in assessing, planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating patient care; applies current concepts and findings from research and/or studies to practice; shares clinical expertise with professional and supportive personnel; accurately documents and reports care; identifies, analyzes and resolves patient care problems whose resolution results in the significant improvement of care to patients; demonstrates such expertise in patient care so as to be recognized by others. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: ? Making morning rounds with surgical teams ? Presents daily patient goals during multidisciplinary and ICU rounds ? Serves as ICU liaison between primary attending surgeon-surgical team and Surgical Intensivist ? Facilitates tasks including but not limited to scheduling surgery, performing physical examinations, prescribing medications, initiating consults, requesting lab studies, X-rays and other imaging, and interpreting diagnostic test results ? Evaluates new and established patients in Clinics, Emergency Department and in the hospital ? Provides continuing care and coordination of care ? Works with Social Services to arrange post-discharge continuing care and treatment ? Assists in discharging patients and providing instructions for follow up and continuing care ? Provides ?on-call? coverage as needed as determined by Surgical Services ? Performs preoperative risk assessment for surgical patients
The tour of duty for the NP will be flexible to meet both staffing and administrative needs and this may include evening, weekend, holidays and off-tour shifts.
